New Drug Menace Sweeping Our Youth

Why is it that older generations tend to blame the younger generations for the ills of society? I have talked to numerous people (each under 70) that have blamed marijuana for the fall of society as they knew it. I personally am not a fan of marijuana and have been quite vocal about my views about the dangers of that drug over the last two decades.

Still, I've never believed that the whole problem started in the Viet Nam era. That is what I've always been told. That people didn't use marijuana when my grandmother was a teen.

However, they did.

And, it was a big enough worry to sell magazines. This advertisement was written in late 1936.

The Frankenstein legend is the fantastic, fictitious story of a scientist who created a monster named after himself, the "Frankenstein," and in the end was killed by this weird creature. Likewise, the human race has a way of creating "Frankenstein" which in turn destroy. Our vices and our drug habits are just such monsters.

The country is now facing a new menace, fast sweeping the ranks of our youth. This is the Mexican drug, Marijuana, elsewhere known as hashish, which creates a reaction that outdoes the old narcotic drugs. It turns a quit, mild-mannered boy and girl into a sex-crazed libertine, into a torturer, even a killer -- and it is being peddled to school children. All parents should know of this insidious danger. Don't fail to read the vivid story on Marijuana in the February Physical Culture
