Russian Verb Шкрябать - To Scratch the Surface of Something

I was watching a travel show in Russian in Namibia and ran across a verb that isn't that common. Here is the section in the video Виндхук. Орёл и Решка. Мегаполисы. The presenters are in Namibia.

Шкрябать doesn't translate well, at least right now in the online auto translators. But, able to find the definition of шкрябать at the page on the Russian Wiktionary (Викисловарь).

шкрябать
то же, что скрести
same as scrape

царапать поверхность чего-либо
to scratch the surface of something

Scraping examples...

Я шкрябаю вилкой по тарелке.
I scrape with a fork on a plate.

Я шкрябаю ложкой по банке арахисового масла.
I scrape through the jar of peanut butter with a spoon.

Ты шкрябаешь по сковороде ложкой.
You scrape the frying pan with a spoon.

A few other uses...

шкрябать карандашом по бумаге
to scribble with pencil on paper

шкрябать по спинке
to scratch on the back

This wouldn't be very pleasant. The implication would be to scratch hard enough to even leave blood.

Comments

  1. The presenter uses "пиликают" for scrape in the same segment.
