I've been learning some Italian through Russian. "Laddering" is a nice way to practice my listening skills in Russian, but learning something totally new.

I didn't just write the verbs down, or say them out loud to practice them. I acted out the movement. This works for all kinds of other verbs. I'd practice verbs like "to buy" when I was at a store. I'd practice verbs like "to photograph" when I was taking photos on my phone. Connecting vocabulary with real life actions or thoughts makes it easier to learn.
