I don't read the subtitles word for word even for films in languages that I don't speak or study. It isn't a conscious decision for me, to skip the some subtitles or focus on others. Mostly I suppose that I don't rely on subtitles because I really do think of watching the movie as entertainment, and if the movie isn't exciting or interesting enough, I skip the whole movie. I'd never watch an otherwise boring movie just for an exercise in language, because it really wouldn't be a very good use of my time at that point. But good movies that are full of situations, action and emotions that appeal to us ... now those we can learn language from because the movie will give us "real life" situations to attach words and phrases too.
