I watched Phantom of the Opera tonight. I think I saw the old, old movie when I was a child. The story wasn't unknown to me, but I've never seen the stage production or this movie before. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln signed the proclamation that made Nevada the 36th state. Being wartime, Battle Born became one of the state's nicknames (saw it on Jeopardy once). In 1864 most of the towns that make Nevada famous today were yet unborn. Back then Virginia City was where it was happening. The Comstock has given Nevada another one of its nicknames... The Silver State. This 36-star flag once flew proud in a mining town. Garmin StreetPilots came up today because my brother stopped by on my day off and told me that these doohickies are selling like hotcakes at Amazon.com (he still works there). They go through pallets of them. He estimates hundreds each day even before they were 50% off (this model to the right is on sale). I've driven several hundred thousand miles over the last 20+ years. I've driven all over the West Coast and a few places back East. And only once did I get lost. It lasted about 15 minutes before I managed to get hold of the barge company on the phone and have them reissue the directions. I was in the Port of Seattle. I'm convinced that the Port of Seattle would fry a Garmin StreetPilot. If I were to buy one of these, I can see the following happen... I punch in the directions to work.
