Apparently Googlie is my auxilliary brain, or so says this post. Actually, I don't agree. Not at all!
As you'll note, I typed Googlie instead of Google. This has nothing to do with my inability to spell. It's my inability to type that caused that. And I think that is why when I actually typed http://www.googlie.com in a browser window I pulled up... can you guess? Did you try it? Yes, Google has purchased that domain name and is forwarding traffic to their main website. I think that is a sign they know that people can't type.
Most of my spelling errors are typing related. There just aren't any new words that I can't spell. The words I make mistakes on now are the same ones I made mistakes on three decades ago in grade school. My grade school education is like the hardware in my spelling programs in my brain. I've gone through and tried to change the software and most days I can override the hardware. But, on days that I'm tired or stressed or typing poorly to boot, I get those words messed up anyway. So I'd say that making spelling errors isn't the inability to remember, it's the inability to forget.
Anyway, their point is that "why remember" when Google is there for you. This is the main reason I don't agree that allowing computers to think for us is really a trend. When it comes to Google, I use it as a tool to find new information. Always. I'm normally looking up stuff like "jaguar weight" or "poser freebies" or myself to see if there are any new reviews at online romance review websites. I think other people are like this too. Someone found my post about how my truck's paint was damaged by egg shell. I'd bet $5 that that was the first time someone egged their truck too.
Do you look up stuff you already know? Or do you look up unique information? What do you Google?

I have a crush on Google, I admit. They've stood me up once (their RSS feed service has been a disapointment, although it is still in Beta - I have hope!) but overall, I love the company and most of what they do.
ReplyDeleteAnything that makes me go "I wonder if..." - if I'm near a connected pc, I google it. Today's searches included Star Trek, roasting your own coffee beans, and web based calendars. And 17 other things.
I haven't made my gmail account my "main" email account, but it's getting more and more use. Mostly as a way to archive my own info.
And I probably google a dozen times or so a day. I am fine with google being a verb too!
Yeah, me too... Well, maybe I only good 5 times a day.
ReplyDeleteYou know what is kind of interesting. People use search engines to look up my domain name. Makes me wonder why, because if they know it, they shouldn't have to search for it.
LOL remember that you started off talking about misspellings?
ReplyDeleteI am a terrible speller. If I have any doubts about a web address (one l or 2? ) I'll start at google and come in from there. If I didn't have your name on my bloglines (or on a fav), I'd be coming in to you via google every time!
I end up googling for pic's for my blog to post and enhance my notes.
ReplyDeleteTyping errors? All.The.Time.
I even wrote it in a post.
I type Resluts for results...a lot. LOL
Its great when I read romances with Highlanders or other known and real characters from the past..I google pics so I can understand what they are describing. There's a lot of descriptions that, unless you know what they are, mean nothing.
Google helps a lot with that.
I love Google, but I miss their "treatment" to their homepage logo based on a historical event or holiday of the day. They've left their funloving roots behind...how sad...
ReplyDeleteKaren -- that's it! LOL. My habit is if I get the domain name wrong I head to Google too, but usually type something else. Guess we all pick up different surfing habits.
ReplyDeleteMichele - I don't read like that enough, looking up something as I read. I have. Maybe it's in part because I read mostly futuristic and paranormal. I haven't read a historical in awhile, and it was erotic romance so the history was spice on the entree.
Rosieboo - They have a holiday doodle today, but I know what you mean.
http://www.google.com/doodle10.html
I google more than I yahoo, but I dont use google for spelling. I have dictionary dot com for that.
ReplyDeleteThe funny thing about long term memory is that all this crap we look up on google eventually ends up there whether we like it or not.
I remember a lot of stuff that I don't have to look up on google, but then again I am old and of a different generation.
