I saw this banner and it reminded me of something I read last night. I haven't mentioned that I've been reading Stephen King's On Writing. One of his suggestions for aspiring authors is to read more and get rid of TV. I'd have to drag the book out to quote him. But basically if you're a writer who wants to write books and not television programs Stephen King's message is the same as that banner above.

Then again, it did occur to me that Stephen King tried to write a television program. Maybe he should watch more TV because they cancelled Kingdom Hospital. Or at least I think they did. The point is this isn't advice I need to take. I came to this conclusion on my own in the 11th grade. I don't watch it every day or even every week. I've gone years without cable all together, but need it now for DSL and still manage to watch about an hour a week tops. I'm so, so out of it when it comes to answering questions about popular culture on game shows though! I read though. I can answer a lot of those questions.

  1. I watch TV most nights or a DVD when there's nothing on worth watching. I get a lot of great ideas from TV shows and learn lots about pacing and plotting from watching both TV shows and DVDs. I think it's good to expose yourself to different media whether it be, TV, newspaper, books, or movies.

  2. I watch movies all the time and have an extensive collection, though I sold half when I moved.

I really like that show Monk and want to buy the DVDs because I forget to watch the show. They had a Monk marathon recently and I taped 7 of them so I can watch a little at a time.

  3. I'm afraid I have my favorite shows each week I watch. I have the t.v. on alot just for the background noise since it's just me :-)

  4. I use the tv for background noise too. There's only a couple of shows I have to watch, ya know? I read a ton though. ;)

  5. I listen to a lot of the Music Choice stations on cable TV for that same reason.

  6. I watch a lot less than I used to, mostly because my favorite shows tend to get cancelled too soon. I have my DVD collections but I find I watch TV to keep my mind occupied when I'm too tired to do anything else rather than for a nights entertainment like I used to.

  7. Hello, Annalee. If you find the source for Stephen King's comment, I'd love to have it. (My mother is a devoted fan of Mr. King and I think she watches far too much tv. Perhaps she can be enticed to give up a little.)

I'm a journaler and mom, not a career writer, so I can't comment on the usefulness of television to your craft. But this is an interesting take on going T.V.-Free. Or T.V. Less Often, at least.

    Thank you for the link!

  9. I also like TV on in the background when I write. I watch Lost and Monk every week. My guilty pleasure: Spongebob Squarepants!

  10. Coolbeans - it's in the book "On Writing". He talks about needing to read a lot, but he doesn't appreciate TV.

Josie - I used to watch my friend's kids while she went shopping and such and they'd watch Spongebob. I admit that I giggled right along with them! My favorite character is that squirrel girl Sandy. I haven't seen the show for a awhile because we live in different towns. Guess I could watch it anyway! LOL.

  11. I'm reading that myself right now. I hardly ever get to watch Tv anymore and I am all right with that, but I am such a bookworm, it is hard to put them down in order to write. LOL I am never going to finish that WIP if I keep this up.

  12. I made my resolution this year to read more because I found I slowed down on that this year and had read half of what I normally do, or less. So far this year I'm back on track.

My Favorite Things

Thirteen of My Favorite Things Raindrops on roses, and whiskers on kittens.... I love watching and singing along to a great musical. When I was a kid I used to run about singing like life was a musical. People would ask me what I was singing, but I was just making it up as I went. And I love dancing. I talked my mother into letting me take ballet lessons for a little while. But I wasn’t graceful and my ballet teacher didn’t have very liberal thoughts on teaching children. If you sucked, she let you know. But, she couldn’t ever accuse me of not enjoying dancing. All my favorite songs are either on soundtracks, or are great story like “Desperado” by the Eagles. Listing thirteen favorites might be the subject of another Thursday Thirteen. Some of the movie songs I’ve listened to while typing today: Da Funk by Daft Punk on The Saint soundtrack and #1 Crush by Mundy on the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack. Writing. I can get lost in writing. I love creating stories and characters. Apparently e
